Why Diamond Hill Memorial?
Written by: Nancy Brann
While hacking around the Farms with my daughter, we stumbled upon a farm under construction. It was obviously not a typical JF barn. We teased that a piece of Wellington had followed us home. Little did we know, it was the new winter home of an Olympic rider. We took this opportunity to look around in awe! It had all of the amenities of a top notch barn. But what stood out the most, was a paved cobbled design, in the middle of the main barn, in the shape of a diamond. Where did this diamond in the farms come from? Later, a Black Canopy adorned the entrance of the barn with the name “Diamond Hill Dressage." I learned from my trainer that it was the winter location for Barbara Silverman.
Barbara was becoming a regular in Florida for the winters. She had a bit of a history of moving around and had decided to set up her own barn in Florida.
Barbara‘s zest for living was very evident in all areas of her life. She climbed to the top of her sport as a rider, competitor, and a trainer; all while being challenged by three separate occurrences of ovarian cancer. Barbara’s passion for life, for using the cancer as a teacher, and for horses, kept her alive much longer than medical science had predicted. She was close to, if not, the longest surviving ovarian cancer patient to date!
Claudia John; former assistant trainer of Diamond Hill Dressage and FEI competitor, also resides in Jupiter Farms; learned much from Barbara over the years, as a horseman but more importantly about life and how precious each and every moment is. She is eternally grateful to have been one of the many whose lives Barbara has touched!
Ovarian cancer claims many women’s lives each year and GCAHC feels this would be a great way to not only benefit a search for a cure, but pay patronage to a “local” prestigious rider.
